Smartwatches and fitness trackers: which one you actually need, and which of these five guides answers it
Five guides, one category, and a single question underneath all of them: do you want a device that measures, or one that measures and then interrupts you. After that it is your wrist, your phone and your sport.
A fitness tracker measures. A smartwatch measures and then interrupts you. Almost every other decision in this category follows from that one line: the band is smaller, runs for weeks on a charge and costs less to live with, while the watch brings the screen, the apps and the built-in GPS, and wants the charger far more often.
These five guides split the category by what you are trying to solve, not by brand. Four things decide it, in this order: the type of device, your phone, your sport, and your data. Each guide below answers one of them properly.
- You want the whole category laid out first. Best smartwatch is the pillar: ten models compared by phone compatibility and by what their makers claim for battery, from the entry-level band up to the Apple Watch.
- You only want steps, heart rate, sleep and notifications. Best fitness tracker is the shorter and cheaper answer, with claimed battery held against typical real use, and a thirty-second test for whether you want a band at all.
- The case has to fit a small wrist. Best smartwatch for women sorts by case size against wrist circumference rather than by brand, and answers where the cycle data ends up.
- You are buying it to train. Best budget sports watch is the one that separates built-in GPS from connected GPS, and 5ATM from IP68, before you take it into a pool.

The one date UK law makes them publish
Since 29 April 2024, a connectable consumer product sold in the UK has to come with a published defined support period: the minimum length of time, expressed with an end date, for which the manufacturer will provide security updates. The regulations are unusually specific about how that has to reach you. The information must be accessible, clear and transparent, made available without prior request, free of charge, without you handing over personal information, and written so that a reader with no technical knowledge can understand it.
The regime covers products that connect to the internet or, over Bluetooth and similar, to another product. Watches and bands do both, and the list of excepted products is short: Northern Ireland supply, electric vehicle charge points, medical devices, smart meters and computers. Wearables are not on it.
This matters more here than in most categories. A smartwatch is a small computer with a heart rate sensor and an account behind it. When the updates stop, the pairing, the companion app and the health sync are on borrowed time, and not one specification sheet warns you. That date is the closest thing this category has to an expiry date.
The rule you can check in ten seconds. Before you buy, search the maker's own site for the model name plus the words support period. If there is no date, that absence is itself the answer about how long the software will live, and it is a fair thing to put to the retailer, because the law says you should not have to ask for it.

Trends, not diagnoses: what the wrist measures well
Not everything on the screen carries the same weight, and the difference decides how much of it you should act on.
- Steps and resting heart rate. The two that hold up. Read them as a weekly or monthly trend, not as a daily score to beat.
- Heart rate during hard intervals. Optical sensors on the wrist lag exactly when the effort changes fastest. For training by zones, a chest strap is still a different class of instrument.
- Sleep. Duration and bedtime are useful enough to change your habits. Sleep staging from the wrist is an approximation on every model, whatever the app calls it.
- Blood oxygen and calories. Both depend on things you cannot control from a wristband: strap fit, skin tone, an estimate built from your weight and pulse. Useful for comparing one day with another, not as absolute numbers.
Read the wording rather than the marketing. These are wellness devices. Where one specific feature has been approved as a medical device in its own right, an ECG app for instance, the maker says so in that feature's own documentation, and the approval covers that feature alone, never the watch.
The rule. If a figure changes meaning when you move the strap two centimetres, it is a trend, not a measurement. This section summarises what published comparisons and the makers' own documentation say. We do not measure against clinical equipment, and we do not publish figures we have not taken ourselves.
Two clocks that decide what happens if it does not fit
A watch is bought on a wrist measurement and a phone model, and both go wrong quietly. Two different UK rights cover two different failures, and they are not interchangeable.
- It arrived and it is simply not for you. Buying online, the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 give you 14 days from the day the goods reach you to cancel, with no reason required. That is the one that covers a case that turned out too big.
- It arrived faulty or not as described. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject for a full refund, with a minimum of 30 days from delivery. After that window the retailer gets one attempt at a repair or replacement first.
The rule. Measure your wrist with a strip of paper before you order, and start counting from the day the box arrives, not the day you get round to setting the watch up. The 14 day clock runs whether or not you have opened it.

How these guides are built, and what we do not do
We have not worn these watches. There is no compared heart rate accuracy here and no invented impressions of a strap, because we do not test them physically and we do not publish measurements we have not taken. What we do instead: hold what a maker advertises against what its own listing, documentation and support pages say, and publish the contradiction when there is one. That is why the guides carry a claimed against realistic battery table rather than a lab figure.
No manufacturer pays to appear in a guide or to be placed first. The order comes from the criteria, and the reason a product is not for you is printed next to the product rather than left out.
Prices are not shown on this page at all. Our price record reads the Amazon catalogue daily in euros, and putting a euro figure in front of someone buying in pounds would be inventing a number. Choose it for the two or three things it measures well, for how long it runs the way you will actually use it, for what it does with your health data, and for the date its security updates stop. The rest is features you will use in the first week and then forget.
