The HDMI trap: 60 Hz or 30 Hz

"4K" on the box does not mean you can work in 4K
Almost every hub with an HDMI port prints "4K" in large type. What almost none of them prints beside it is the number of hertz. That one omission is the whole difference.
What is advertised
"4K HDMI output". It reads as though you are getting a perfect 4K screen.
What matters
4K at 60 Hz or at 30 Hz? At 30 Hz the mouse pointer moves in visible steps and dragging a window smears: it becomes tiring within ten minutes. At 60 Hz it looks normal. A great many budget hubs cut cost exactly here and stop at 4K 30.

m8d rule: If the listing does not say "4K at 60 Hz" or "4K@60Hz" in those words, assume it is 4K at 30. For a television that only ever plays video it makes no difference. For a monitor you work at, it makes all of it.

On paper every USB-C hub does the same thing: you plug it into the laptop and ports appear. That is why the listings boast about being "10 in 1" or "12 in 1", as though the count were the specification. It is not. A ten-port hub with its HDMI at 30 Hz and half its USB ports slow is a worse buy than a well-chosen six-port one. Three things change your day: how many hertz the HDMI puts out at 4K, how many watts it leaves to charge the laptop, and how many gigabits it moves data at. The rest is packaging.

There is a second reason the hertz go missing from a listing: the vocabulary around USB has been rewritten and most sellers are still using the old words. The USB Implementers Forum, which owns the specification and the certification, now publishes its packaging and port logos as plain performance names.

"SuperSpeed USB", "USB 3.0", "USB 3.1 Gen 1", "USB 3.2 Gen 2x2". Four different phrases, two of which describe the same speed, and none of which a shopper can rank.
What the USB-IF actually publishes
Certified performance logos that name the speed and nothing else: USB 5Gbps, USB 10Gbps, USB 20Gbps, USB 40Gbps and USB 80Gbps, plus separate power logos that state the watts a USB Type-C cable or port supports. A product may only carry them after passing the matching compliance test.
What it means for you
"USB 3.0" and "USB 3.1 Gen 1" and "SuperSpeed" all mean 5 Gbps. "USB 3.1 Gen 2" and "USB 3.2 Gen 2" both mean 10 Gbps. If a hub is genuinely fast its maker has every reason to print the number, so a listing that hides behind the old generation names is usually hiding 5 Gbps.

Hub, dock or powered hub: when you need each one

Why drives disconnect, and what actually fixes it
An ordinary hub takes its power from the laptop itself, which is why it is called bus powered. It shares that current between everything you plug in. As long as that is one screen and a couple of USB devices, it has plenty.
The symptom
You plug in two external hard drives and every so often they disconnect on their own, or a phone charges impossibly slowly. The hub is not broken.
The cause, and the fix
The laptop's port cannot supply that much current. What you need is a powered hub, with its own mains adapter, or a dock: both bring energy in from outside instead of taking it from the machine.

Be honest about your own case: none of the seven on this list is a powered dock. They are bus-powered hubs, and for what most people need, one screen, a charged laptop and a few USB ports, that is plenty. If your problem is several drives dropping out, this is not your list, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a cheap hub that will not fix it.

Two screens from one USB-C port

This is the question that produces the most returns, and the answer is almost never about the hub. A single USB-C port carries video by borrowing DisplayPort lanes, which is called DisplayPort Alt Mode. How many independent screens come out of those lanes is decided by the laptop and its graphics driver, not by how many HDMI sockets the hub has on it.

MST is the multi-stream feature that splits one DisplayPort connection into several independent displays. DisplayLink is a different mechanism entirely: it compresses video and sends it as USB data, which works almost anywhere and costs some processor time. Neither is a property of the hub you buy: they are properties of the machine and its driver.

The ten-second check. Find your laptop model on the maker's own spec page and read the line describing the USB-C port. If it says DisplayPort Alt Mode or DP, video comes out of it.
