Best microwave 2026: which one fits your worktop with the space its maker asks for, from small to combination

The best microwave for a UK kitchen is one whose maker says how much room it takes. Of 62 listings we counted on amazon.es on 8 September 2026, 55 give the litres and one gives the outside size. For most kitchens, the LG MH6535GIS; for a tight space, the Cecotec ProClean 2010; for oven dishes, the ProClean 3020 Flatbed.

The space

How big a 20, 25 and 28 litre microwave is on the outside, and how much space around it the maker asks for

A 20 litre microwave is 43.4 to 45.5 cm wide and 31.5 to 35.8 cm deep, according to the spec sheets of the four in this guide. A 25 litre model goes up to 47.6 by 38.7 and a 28 litre one to 51 by 45. Five more litres cost about two centimetres of width; going from 25 to 28 costs three and a half of width and six of depth. Those are the figures that decide whether it fits, and they are exactly the ones missing where you buy.

And there is a second measurement almost nobody checks. LG's UK owner's manual asks you to «allow at least 20 cm from the top, 20 cm from the sides, and 20 cm back of the oven for proper ventilation», plus 8 cm from the front edge so it cannot tip and a surface more than 85 cm high. On that sum, the 47.6 cm appliance needs a space 87.6 cm wide. If yours is going on a worktop under wall units, we would point out that the deciding figure is not the litres: it is the depth plus the air behind, where the same manual asks for the same 20 cm as at the sides.

What a microwave listing says and what can be checked

Capacity is the figure this whole category is sold on: 55 of the 62 listings in the census publish it, and 32 of those 55 are 20 litres. Capacity is a volume and says nothing about the shape of the box, about the room it needs around it or about which dish fits inside.

What the listing says
«20 L capacity». «25 L». «28 litres and 3 functions». Fifty-five of sixty-two listings open with the litres.
What the same maker publishes on its spec sheet
44.6 by 35.8 by 24.3 cm for the 20 litre model. 47.6 by 38.7 by 27.2 for the 25. 51 by 45 by 30 for the 28. One listing out of 62 carried all three figures in its headline.
And the measurement that is in none of them
The air around it. On Hisense's spec sheet, the three installation niche fields, height, width and depth, are filled in with «n/a»: the box in the table exists and it is empty.
What that means for you
That a microwave is hardly ever returned for heating badly. A 60 cm gap between two units, with the 20 cm LG's manual asks for on each side, leaves 20 cm for the appliance, and the narrowest of the six countertop models in this guide is 43.4 cm wide. Even leaving 10 cm a side, the smallest one does not fit.

m8d rule: The litres of a microwave tell you what fits inside and not whether it fits in your kitchen. Before looking at capacity, take 20 cm off your space for each side, 20 for the back and 20 for the top: what is left is the appliance that fits.

Microwave size calculator: which microwave fits your space, with the clearance the maker asks for

It takes two figures to know whether a microwave fits and listings give one: of the 62 we counted on amazon.es on 8 September 2026, 55 give the litres and one gives the outside dimensions. This m8d.io calculator uses the size of six countertop microwaves taken from their makers' spec sheets and the air LG's manual asks for, and tells you what fits your space with the full margin, with half of it and pushed against the wall. With its default settings, a 90 by 60 by 45 cm corner space and the manual's 20 cm of air, two of the six fit, up to 20 litres. Below it are a dish checker and an air fryer checker that tells you whether the air fryer on a microwave is hot air or a grill with a new name. Free, with no account.

Which microwave fits your space, with the clearance its maker asks forMeasure the space where it will live, choose how much air you will leave around it and you get the litres that really fit, using the outside dimensions each maker publishes. Of the 62 listings we counted on amazon.es on 8 September 2026, 55 say how many litres fit inside and just one says how much room it takes up outside. Free, with no account.
Width of the space
Depth of the space, from the wall to the edge
Clear height up to the wall unit

What fitsUp to 20 litres

The sum, in full: a space of 90 by 60 by 45 cm, minus 20 cm on each side, 20 behind and 20 above, leaves 50 × 40 × 25 cm for the appliance. The narrowest of the six countertop models in this guide is 43.4 cm wide and the largest, 51 cm. With those measurements 2 of the 6 fit: Corberó CMICM250W, Cecotec ProClean 2010.

The three steps for the same space
20 cm of air2 of 6 fitwhat the maker's manual asks for
10 cm of air6 of 6 fithalf the margin it asks for
Flush6 of 6 fitwithout the air its manual asks for

With the full margin you are doing what the manual asks, and that is why the list is short: 20 cm on each side is 40 cm of space nobody uses. If your kitchen does not have it, you are not alone: the honest decision is to cut the margin knowingly, not to assume the appliance never needed it.

And if the space is a cabinet, not a worktop

Then what matters is not this but the housing size, a different figure the maker publishes separately: the built-in model in this guide needs a housing 36.2 cm high, 56 wide and 32 deep, and its frame covers the rest. A countertop microwave pushed into a made-to-measure cabinet is not a built-in: it lacks the air outlet the cabinet does not have.

Microwave dish checker: which dish fits each microwave, turntable included

Litres tell you the volume, not the shape. What decides whether your dish fits is the diameter of the turntable, because it has to turn without touching the walls, and 2 of the 62 listings we counted publish it. Choose what you usually put in and the answer comes from the spec sheets.

3 of 6 fit. With a turntable the limit is its diameter, because the dish has to turn with it without touching the walls; without one the limit is the width of the cavity. The two models from the same brand in this guide show it on their own: the one with a turntable stops at 24.5 cm and the one without takes a side of 29.7 cm, with almost the same litres and almost the same box outside.

Microwave air fryer checker: real hot air or just a grill

Of the 62 listings in the census, 8 are sold with the words air fryer, 6 also name convection or hot air and 2 publish the watts of that function. Look at the spec sheet of the one you are considering and tick what you find.

Does it name convection, hot air or oven?
Does it publish the watts of that function, apart from the grill?
Does it give a temperature range in degrees?
What is behind the nameOnly the nameThe spec sheet uses the word and publishes neither the watts nor the degrees of that function, so there is no way to know how much hot air it moves or how hot it gets. It is the most common case in the census.

Three fields ticked, 1 of 3 with data. The difference matters in the kitchen: a grill heats by radiation from above and browns the top; hot air moves heat around the whole piece of food, which is what an air fryer does. An appliance can be called an air fryer with the first.

The ruleIf a microwave says air fryer and publishes neither the watts of that function nor its degrees, treat it as a grill until its spec sheet says otherwise.

The outside dimensions, the cavity and the turntable diameter of the 6 models come from each maker's spec sheet (corbero.es, cecotec.es, hisense.es, lg.com/es, grunkel.com), read on 8 September 2026 and linked in the sources at the foot of the page. The 20 cm of air are what LG's UK owner's manual asks for its countertop microwaves; the steps of 10 cm and zero are not standards, they are half that figure and the flush case, and they are called what they are. The 22 cm side plate, the 26 cm dinner plate and the 30 cm oven dish are ordinary tableware sizes used to compare appliances with each other, not a substitute for measuring yours with a tape.

The UK label

The letter on a UK microwave: what heating category B, D or E means, and why it is not the wattage

Many microwaves sold in the UK carry a letter next to the watts on the rating label. Sharp's owner's manual for its R-82STM explains where it comes from: «The heating category (a letter A to E) was developed by MAFF (Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) with microwave oven and food manufacturers and indicates the ability of the oven to heat small quantities of food (up to 500g [1lb 2oz])». It measures how fast a small portion heats, not the output on the rating plate, and that is why the same manual lists that 900 W model as category D.

So the watts and the letter answer two different questions, and the watts are the ones every listing gives. What the higher figure changes is time, and LG writes it in its own UK manual for the 1,000 W MH6535GIS: «The setting of the cooking time should be shorter than common microwave ovens (700 W, 800 W) due to the relatively high output power of the product». If a pack gives times for 800 W and yours is 700 W, it needs longer; at 1,000 W, less.

The rule you can check in ten seconds. Read the output watts on the rating plate or in the manual, not the letter. If a cooking time was written for a different wattage, lower watts need longer and higher watts need less, and the food has to be piping hot all the way through either way. The letter tells you how the oven handles a small portion; the watts are what the rest of this guide compares.

The power

The 700 W on almost every microwave: what it measures and how much electricity a microwave really uses

The 700 W on a microwave is not what it draws: it is what it delivers to the food. That is the output power, measured with a published method, the standard IEC 60705, whose fifth edition dates from 13 November 2024 and also covers microwaves with grill and combination models. LG prints it in its own UK manual, at the foot of the specification table: «IEC 60705 RATING STANDARD».

The other figure, the one on the electricity bill, is the power it takes from the socket, and none of the 62 listings in the census publishes it. Two of the seven maker spec sheets we read for this guide do, and the gap between the two figures is plain to see. It is also why more watts do not mean more electricity per plate: the bill is watts multiplied by time, and the stronger one heats the same mug of milk in fewer minutes.

The 62 distinct microwave listings we counted on amazon.es on 8 September 2026 across ten searches of the family. The count is of what each headline says, which is what the buyer reads, and headlines are read up to 160 characters. None of the 62 publishes the electricity consumption.

The same figure in two places: what reaches the food and what leaves the socket

Two makers in this guide publish both figures on their official spec sheet, and they are the two sources that make the whole sum possible. A third publishes only the standby consumption. The rest publish a single figure, the output, which is also the one that travels to the listing.

What the listing says
«700 W power», «1,000 W», «900 W». Thirty-seven of sixty-two listings give a number of watts and none says which of the two it is.
What LG publishes in its UK manual
Microwave output 1,000 W. Power consumption 1,150 W for the microwave, 900 W for the grill and 1,450 W in grill combination, plus 0.5 W in standby. Separate lines in the same specification table.
What Balay publishes in its own
Microwave power 800 W and connection power 1,270 W. And a sentence that explains the Inverter with a number: the maximum power is regulated to 600 W when it is used for a long time.
What that means for you
That the figure that matters for the socket, and for sharing a circuit with another appliance, is the second one, and that a microwave with 700 W declared takes quite a bit more from the wall. Three minutes at 1,150 W are 0.058 kWh: multiply by the unit rate on your own bill.

m8d rule: The watts in the listing are what reaches the food; the ones you pay for are another figure that hardly anyone publishes. If you need to know what it takes from the socket, look on the maker's spec sheet for «power consumption» or «connection power», never in the shop's headline.

What the word Inverter changes on the same model. What it buys is written on the spec sheet of another maker in this guide, and it is the clearest statement we found: instead of switching the magnetron on and off to lower the power, the appliance regulates it, which is why Balay declares that its maximum drops to 600 W in long uses. It helps to defrost without cooking the edges. It does not make it heat faster.

m8d verdict

Best for anyone with room to spare who wants to stop guessing. Of the eight in this guide we recommend this one, and not for the brand: of the six countertop models whose spec sheets we read, it is the only one that publishes the outside size, the cavity, the turntable diameter and both power figures, the output and what it takes from the socket. With those four things you know whether it fits, which dish goes in and what it shares a circuit with, the three questions a microwave gets sent back over.

What you should know
  • Its UK owner's manual publishes 1,000 W output and 1,150 W consumption for the microwave, and 1,450 W when the grill works at the same time. None of the 62 listings in the census publishes that second figure, and it is the one that decides whether it can share a socket with anything else.
  • It is 47.6 cm wide, 38.7 deep and 27.2 high. With the 20 cm of air LG's manual asks for at the back and on each side, it needs a space of 87.6 by 58.7 by 47.2 cm, more than there is between two ordinary kitchen units.
  • The turntable is 29.2 cm, so a 30 cm oven dish is 8 millimetres too wide for it, and that is where the turntable figure stops being a detail.
  • The cavity is 32.2 by 33.4 by 22.3 cm. The 25 litres it advertises come from there, and they can be compared with another model that publishes its cavity; against one that only gives litres, there is no comparison.
  • It is the only one of the seven spec sheets that goes from 700 to 1,000 W of output. That does not mean it uses more per plate: it means the same mug of milk takes less time, and the bill is watts multiplied by time.
+Pros
  • Publishes output and consumption separately, which almost nobody does
  • Publishes outside dimensions, cavity and turntable diameter
  • The largest turntable among those that have one in this guide, 29.2 cm
  • Its manual says in numbers how much air to leave around it
−Cons
  • With the ventilation its maker asks for it needs a space almost 88 cm wide
  • The deepest of the models of 25 litres or less in this guide, 38.7 cm
  • A 30 cm rectangular dish does not turn inside

Microwaves without a turntable: which dish really fits, and why the turntable decides more than the litres

A microwave without a turntable takes rectangular dishes and one with a turntable does not. The reason is geometry: the dish turns with the plate, so its longest side has to fit inside a circle. The figure that decides it is published by two listings out of 62 in the census.

The two models from the same brand in this guide show it on their own. The one with a turntable stops at a 24.5 cm diameter; the one without offers a flat base of 29.7 by 29.6 cm, with the same 20 litres and a nearly identical box outside. On the second one's spec sheet the turntable diameter field reads zero, and that zero is the information.

What each maker's spec sheet publishes, read on 8 September 2026 and linked in the sources at the foot of the page, with nothing added by us. The Balay is a built-in: its measurements are those of the appliance with its frame, and its housing size is a separate figure, further down. For the Panasonic, the watts come from its own listing and «no data» marks what we could not read on its official spec sheet, which is not the same as the maker not publishing it.

m8d verdict

Best for anyone who uses rectangular dishes and tubs. Without a turntable the limit stops being a 24.5 cm circle and becomes the whole base: 29.7 by 29.6 cm of flat floor. And it is the shallowest of the seven, 31.5 cm, which on a worktop under wall units is worth more than a litre of capacity.

What you should know
  • On the maker's spec sheet, the turntable diameter field reads zero. It is not missing information: it has no turntable, so the dish does not have to fit in a circle.
  • Its usable base is 29.7 by 29.6 cm against the 24.5 cm turntable of its sibling from the same brand. With almost the same litres and almost the same box outside, what changes is the shape of what fits.
  • It is the shallowest of the seven in this guide: 31.5 cm, four and a half less than the same brand's model with a turntable. In a space between two units those four centimetres are the difference between fitting and not.
  • Without a turntable there is no rotating ring to clean or knock out of place: two fewer moving parts. In exchange the food does not rotate, so deep dishes need turning halfway.
  • It declares 700 W like 23 of the 37 listings in the census that give the figure. Its spec sheet does not publish the power consumption, like the rest of its level.
+Pros
  • Flat base of 29.7 by 29.6 cm: rectangular dishes fit
  • 31.5 cm deep, the shallowest in the guide
  • No rotating ring to clean or reposition
  • Ceramic interior declared by the maker
−Cons
  • The food does not turn: deep dishes need turning
  • Its spec sheet does not publish the power consumption
  • Without a turntable, even heating depends on stirring

Best for the impossible space, the one under 50 cm between the fridge and the wall. It is the narrowest of the seven in this guide, 43.4 cm, and one of the two listings out of 62 that write the turntable diameter where you buy it. The 19.5 litres are half a litre under the category standard and not noticeable; the centimetre and a half it saves outside is.

What you should know
  • It is one of the two listings out of 62 that write the turntable diameter in the headline: 24.5 cm. The other sixty make you look for it on the maker's spec sheet, when it is there.
  • It is the narrowest of the seven: 43.4 cm wide by 32.6 deep and 24.2 high. With the air LG's manual asks for on each side it still needs 83.4 cm of space, and even so it is the one that needs least.
  • Its technical sheet declares the standby consumption, under 0.3 W. It is the only electricity figure we found across the seven spec sheets besides LG's and Balay's connection power.
  • The cavity is 30.2 by 29.8 by 21.8 cm, so 19.5 litres. Half a litre less than a 20 litre model is not noticeable in use; the centimetre and a half saved outside is.
  • Mechanical 35-minute timer and five levels. No grill, no clock, and a three-year guarantee declared by the maker in Spain.
+Pros
  • The narrowest in the guide: 43.4 cm wide
  • Publishes the turntable diameter in the listing itself
  • Declares standby consumption, under 0.3 W
  • Three-year guarantee declared in Spain
−Cons
  • 19.5 litres: one of the smallest inside
  • No grill and mechanical controls
  • Does not publish its consumption while running

The rule

Why a microwave has no energy label, and what to look at instead

A microwave has no energy label because the rule that creates the label leaves it out in writing. In Great Britain the energy labelling of domestic ovens is still Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) No 65/2014, kept as UK law, and its article 1(2)(b) says it does not apply to «ovens which offer a ‹microwave heating› function». There is no A class, no A+ and no kilowatt hours a year to compare, and that holds for a combination model and for a basic solo alike.

That is why the gap in consumption information has to be filled by the maker's spec sheet, and why it matters which of the two figures it publishes. The three we did find across the seven spec sheets of this guide are LG's, Balay's connection power and Corberó's standby.

The three consumption figures that exist in this category, and where each one is
  • Output power. The 700, 800 or 1,000 W in the listing. It is what reaches the food, measured with the method of the IEC 60705 standard, and not what the meter records. 37 of the 62 listings in the census publish it.
  • Power consumption or connection power. What it takes from the socket. Zero of the 62 listings publish it, and two of the seven maker spec sheets we read: 1,150 W microwave and 1,450 W combined on the LG, and 1,270 W connection on the Balay.
  • Standby. What it uses switched off with the clock on. One of the seven spec sheets publishes it, Corberó's, and the figure is under 0.3 W; LG's UK manual gives 0.5 W. On an appliance used five minutes a day and plugged in 24 hours, it is not a minor figure.
  • And the one that does not exist. There are no official kilowatt hours a year to compare two microwaves, because Regulation (EU) No 65/2014, retained in UK law, leaves them out of energy labelling in its article 1(2)(b). Any energy class you see on a microwave listing does not come from that rule.
The air

Combination microwaves and microwaves with grill: how to tell whether there is hot air behind the air fryer name

A microwave works as an air fryer only if it has convection, and convection is declared with watts and degrees. Of the 62 listings in the census, eight use the words air fryer, six also name convection or hot air and two publish the watts of that function. Without that figure there is no way to know how much heat it moves, and a grill with a new name does not brown in the same way.

The difference shows in the kitchen, not on the spec sheet: a grill is an element at the top that heats the upper face by radiation; convection is a fan that moves hot air around the whole piece of food, which is exactly what an air fryer does. That is what separates a combination microwave from one with a grill. If that function matters to you, look at the watts before the name: the two listings that publish them give 2,200 W of hot air on one and a 1,300 W grill plus convection on the other. The checker in the calculator above has three fields for the one you are looking at.

The grill has its own gap. Thirty-seven of the 62 listings carry a grill and 21 publish its watts, so four in ten grill microwaves sell a heating element without saying how strong it is. And on the official page of one model in this guide, the specification table gives a 1,000 W grill while the highlights block of the same page gives 800 W, the figure the shop listing copies. When that happens, the specification table is the one to compare with, because it is the one the maker fills in the same way for every model.

Best for anyone who wants an air fryer and a microwave in one appliance and has the worktop for it. It is one of the two listings in the census that say air fryer and also publish the watts of that function, 2,200 W of hot air apart from the 1,200 of the grill. The downside is on the tape measure: 51 by 45 cm is the most worktop of the guide, and its spec sheet publishes neither the total consumption nor the degrees of the air.

Best for a kitchen without an oven, or with one that never gets switched on. m8d verdict

Best for anyone who wants to grill without going above 20 litres or 45.5 cm of width. It is one of the few at its level that publish the three sizes that matter, outside, cavity and a 25.5 cm turntable, and the quartz grill has its power written in the maker's specification table. With the small print said: that table gives a 1,000 W grill and the highlights on the same page give 800, and for comparing with another appliance the first is the one to use.

What you should know
  • Its official page gives two different figures for the same grill: the specification table says 1,000 W and the highlights block says 800 W, the one the shop listing copies. When two figures from the same maker disagree, the specification table is the one to compare with.
  • It measures 45.5 by 32.6 by 26.1 cm and its cavity 30.2 by 30.2 by 21.5. It is one of the few at its level that publish both, plus the turntable, 25.5 cm across.
  • On its own spec sheet, the three installation niche fields, height, width and depth, read «n/a». The maker has the box in its table and leaves it empty, which is exactly the problem this guide is about.
  • The specification table says the cavity is painted steel and the marketing block on the same page talks of a ceramic coating. Both texts are the maker's, and the first is the one to read.
  • The grill is an element at the top: it browns the upper face and does not cook through. For finishing a lasagne that is already hot it works; for making one from raw, it does not.
+Pros
  • Publishes outside dimensions, cavity and turntable diameter
  • Quartz grill with its power in the specification table
  • Three-year guarantee declared by the maker in Spain
  • 25.5 cm turntable, a centimetre more than the most common size
−Cons
  • Its own page gives two different grill powers
  • Leaves the three installation niche fields as «n/a»
  • Dial controls: no clock or programmes

Built-in microwaves: the housing size to check before you order the cabinet

A built-in microwave has two sizes and the one that matters is the second. The appliance size is the box with its frame; the housing size is the opening you have to leave in the cabinet. On the built-in model in this guide they are 382 by 595 by 335 mm for the appliance and a housing of 362 to 365 mm high, 560 to 568 wide and 320 deep, with the range included because wood moves.

It is the one decision in this category where a mistake costs the cabinet as well as the appliance. A countertop microwave pushed into a made-to-measure space is not a built-in: it lacks the air outlet the cabinet does not have and the frame that covers the gap.

m8d verdict

Best for anyone fitting a kitchen who wants the microwave inside a tall unit. It is the only one in the guide that publishes its housing size, a different figure from the size of the appliance and the one to give the kitchen fitter. And it publishes its connection power, 1,270 W, which is what it takes from the socket and appears in no listing in the census: only two of the seven spec sheets we read give it.

What you should know
  • It publishes two sizes, not one: the appliance measures 382 by 595 by 335 mm and the housing runs from 362 to 365 mm high, 560 to 568 wide and 320 deep. The difference is the frame, which covers the gap.
  • It declares 800 W of microwave and 1,270 W of connection power. That second figure, what it takes from the socket, is not published by any listing in the census of 8 September 2026.
  • Its spec sheet explains what the Inverter does with a sentence you can check: the maximum power is regulated to 600 W when used for a long time. It is the appliance easing off so as not to overheat, not a secret mode.
  • The turntable is 27 cm, two and a half more than the 24.5 repeated by two of the seven spec sheets we read. The cavity, on the other hand, is 280 by 300 by 180 mm: a 20 litre built-in is lower inside than a countertop one.
  • It goes in a 60 cm tall unit and opens to the left. If the cabinet is already made, check those two things before the litres.
+Pros
  • Publishes the housing size, what the cabinet needs
  • Publishes the connection power, 1,270 W
  • 27 cm turntable and grill that combines with 180 and 360 W of microwave
  • Explains on its spec sheet what the Inverter does, with the figure
−Cons
  • Only 180 mm of cavity height: a tall dish does not fit
  • Needs a made-to-measure cabinet
  • Door opens to the left only

The UK rules

Buying a microwave in the UK: its own socket, a fused plug and 30 days to reject a faulty one

A microwave draws more than most things on a kitchen worktop, and LG's UK manual says so plainly in its installation steps: «Make sure the microwave oven is the only appliance connected to the socket». At 1,150 W for the microwave and 1,450 W with the grill on the LG, that rules out sharing a four-way extension lead with the kettle.

The plug is a rule too. Regulation 12 of the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994 says an appliance can only be supplied in the UK fitted with a standard BS 1363 plug and a BS 1362 fuse, or with a conversion plug that encloses the foreign plug and can only be removed with a tool. A marketplace listing that says EU plug is the continental version, and a loose travel adaptor is not the same thing. And if it arrives faulty, section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days, from the day after delivery, to reject it and ask for your money back instead of a repair.

The method

How we chose these microwaves and where every figure comes from

How we assessed them

We started from the whole catalogue, not from a list. On 8 September 2026 we went through amazon.es with ten searches of the family and counted 62 distinct microwave listings from 23 brands, leaving out accessories and spare parts. For each one we noted what its headline says, which is what the buyer reads: litres, microwave watts, grill watts, turntable diameter, outside dimensions, consumption, interior material and the words air fryer. That census is Spanish, and it is the source of every count on this page.

Then we read the official spec sheet of each candidate on its maker's website, which is where every measurement on this page comes from: cecotec.es, hisense.es, lg.com/es, corbero.es, grunkel.com and balay.es. For the clearance and the power figures we used LG's UK owner's manual for the MH6535GIS, downloaded from lg.com/uk on 22 September 2026, and for the heating category, Sharp's owner's manual for the R-82STM. Five criteria decide the order, and none of them is a shop's star rating. One, what the spec sheet publishes: a microwave whose maker does not give the outside size does not let you know whether it fits, and that moves it down. Two, the ratio between the room it takes and what it holds, useful litres per centimetre of worktop. Three, the turntable diameter or the width of the base, which decides which dish fits. Four, whether it solves a specific case (a narrow space, a rectangular dish, a housing unit, a kitchen without an oven) rather than being the biggest. Five, that it was on sale when the selection was made.

The figures that do not come from the census carry their source and date at the foot. The output power method is the IEC 60705 standard, fifth edition of 13 November 2024. The exclusion from energy labelling is article 1(2)(b) of Regulation (EU) No 65/2014 as retained in UK law. The centimetres of air are those of LG's UK owner's manual and are quoted as what they are: one maker's condition, not an industry standard. Which of these models are sold in the UK, and at what price, changes from one country to another: the buttons take you to your local Amazon store.

How often this guide is reviewed. The measurements and spec sheets, whenever a model in the selection changes; the whole selection and the census, every quarter.

Microwave questions
Which is better for cooking, an 800 W or a 900 W microwave?

The difference is time, not results. Output watts, measured with the IEC 60705 method, say how fast the food heats: a 900 W microwave gets there in fewer minutes than an 800 W one, and LG writes in its UK manual for its 1,000 W model that cooking times should be shorter than on common 700 W and 800 W ovens. It does not mean it uses more electricity per plate, because the bill is watts multiplied by time.

How many watts should a good microwave have?

Of the 62 listings in our census of 8 September 2026, 37 publish a figure and 23 of those say 700 W, the normal output for 20 litres. A higher figure only shortens the time. And check which figure you are reading: the watts in the listing are the output measured with IEC 60705; what it takes from the socket is another number, which none of the 62 publishes and LG's UK manual gives as 1,150 W for its 1,000 W model.

What does the letter on a UK microwave mean?

It is the heating category, a letter from A to E. Sharp's owner's manual for its R-82STM explains that it was developed by MAFF with microwave and food manufacturers and indicates how well the oven heats small quantities of food, up to 500 g. It is not the wattage: that same manual lists its 900 W model as category D. For cooking times, go by the watts printed next to it.

Which brand of microwave is best?

No brand wins at everything, and the census explains why: brands differ above all in how much they tell you. Of the 23 brands in it, one publishes output power, microwave consumption, combined consumption, outside size, cavity and turntable; another publishes the housing size and the connection power; and several go no further than litres and watts. Our choice for most kitchens is the LG MH6535GIS because its spec sheet lets you know whether it fits and what it takes from the socket before you buy it, not because its brand is better than the others.

How much space do you need around a microwave?

LG's UK owner's manual asks for at least 20 cm at the top, 20 cm at the sides and 20 cm at the back for proper ventilation, 8 cm from the front edge so it cannot tip, and a surface more than 85 cm high. The same manual says what happens otherwise: in an enclosed space or cupboard the air flow for cooling could be worse, with lower performance and reduced service life. It is one maker's condition, not an industry standard, and other makers ask for less.

Is a microwave without a turntable better?

It is if you use rectangular dishes, and it is not if you like the food to turn. With a turntable the longest side of the dish has to fit in a circle, which is 24.5 cm on two of the seven spec sheets we read. Without one the limit is the width of the base: on the model in this guide, 29.7 by 29.6 cm with the same 20 litres and almost the same box outside. The trade-off is that the food does not rotate, so deep dishes need turning halfway.

How big is the housing for a built-in microwave?

It depends on the model, which is why the maker publishes two sizes. On the built-in model in this guide, the appliance measures 382 by 595 by 335 mm and the housing runs from 362 to 365 mm high, 560 to 568 wide and 320 deep, for a 60 cm wide tall unit. The range is not carelessness: it is the gap the frame covers. A countertop microwave in a made-to-measure space is not a built-in, because it lacks the air outlet.

How much electricity does a microwave use?

Its power consumption multiplied by the time it is on, and no listing in our census publishes that figure. On the makers' spec sheets we read it appears like this: 1,150 W for the microwave and 1,450 W with the grill on the LG, and 1,270 W connection power on the Balay. Three minutes at 1,150 W are 0.058 kWh, to multiply by the unit rate on your bill. There is no official yearly consumption to compare two microwaves, because the energy label rule excludes them.

If you have room to spare and want to stop guessing, the LG MH6535GIS: it is the only one of the six countertop models whose spec sheet and UK manual let you do the whole sum before paying, for the space and for the socket. If the space is tight, the Cecotec ProClean 2010, which is 44.6 cm wide and also publishes its cavity and its turntable. If what you put in are rectangular dishes and tubs, the ProClean 3020 Flatbed, because without a turntable the limit stops being a 24.5 cm circle and becomes a 29.7 cm base.

And one thing above the three. With a 60 cm gap between two units, what we would do is drop from 25 to 20 litres before giving up the air behind: the five litres are missed once a month and the trapped heat works every day. Capacity is the figure advertised most and the one that decides least.

Best for a small kitchen and for anyone who reheats more than they cook. It takes 44.6 by 35.8 by 24.3 cm and its maker also publishes the cavity and the turntable, so it is one of the few at its level that let you do the sum for the space before paying. What it does not publish is how much electricity it takes, and at its level almost nobody does.

Pros
  • Publishes output and consumption separately, which almost nobody does
  • Publishes outside dimensions, cavity and turntable diameter
  • The largest turntable among those that have one in this guide, 29.2 cm
  • Its manual says in numbers how much air to leave around it
  • Publishes outside dimensions, cavity and turntable diameter
  • 44.6 cm wide: one of those needing least space with full ventilation
  • Smooth interior with an easy-clean coating declared by the maker
  • Mechanical dials, no menu to learn
  • Flat base of 29.7 by 29.6 cm: rectangular dishes fit
  • 31.5 cm deep, the shallowest in the guide
  • No rotating ring to clean or reposition
  • Ceramic interior declared by the maker
Cons
  • With the ventilation its maker asks for it needs a space almost 88 cm wide
  • The deepest of the models of 25 litres or less in this guide, 38.7 cm
  • A 30 cm rectangular dish does not turn inside
  • Does not publish its power consumption or standby
  • The 24.5 cm turntable leaves out a 26 cm dinner plate
  • No grill: it browns nothing
  • The food does not turn: deep dishes need turning
  • Its spec sheet does not publish the power consumption
  • Without a turntable, even heating depends on stirring
