How much does it cost to make an iPhone? It depends on the model, and in 2026 it rose: the last open teardown total is $416 for an iPhone 16 (TD Cowen, 2024), and TrendForce puts the iPhone 18 Pro's parts about 38% above the 17 Pro's, mostly memory. Parts are not everything: Apple spent $34.55bn on R&D in 2025.

What an iPhone costs Apple, in four figures
  • $416: the last teardown with an open total, for the iPhone 16 (TD Cowen, via AppleInsider, 1 October 2024); the source does not say which storage size.
  • +38% in components for a 256GB iPhone 18 Pro against the 17 Pro (TrendForce), and nearly +$300 for a 1TB 18 Pro Max against the 17 Pro Max (Counterpoint Research).
  • Memory went from about 10% to 34% of an iPhone's parts bill in a year (TrendForce, August 2026).
  • Apple keeps 36.8% of its hardware sales as gross margin (2025), before $34.55bn of R&D; it does not publish a margin for the iPhone on its own.

iPhone cost breakdown: what it costs to make against what a UK buyer pays, model by model

iPhone cost breakdown calculator: cost to make against the UK price, model by model

Choose a model, its storage and a country: the calculator sets the cost to make it, from the latest public teardown of that model, against Apple's official price once VAT is taken out, and against the same iPhone in the US. A tool from m8d.io, free, with no sign-up and no ads. Default example: the iPhone 16 is the only one of the six on sale with an open teardown total in dollars, and making it comes to 39% of the £799 a UK buyer pays for the 128GB model (the source does not say which storage size the teardown is for), with Apple's UK price read on 28 September 2026.

An iPhone's price, taken apart country by countryChoose the model, the storage and the country. The calculator splits Apple's official price into three: VAT, what it costs to make according to the most recent public teardown of that model, and what is left for everything else. It also sets it against the same iPhone in the United States, where Apple lists its prices before sales tax.

UK vs United States: you pay £197 more for the same iPhone, which Apple lists at $799 before tax in the US (£602 at the exchange rate of 28 September 2026). Of that difference, £133 is VAT; the other £64 is price: before tax, it still costs 11% more here.

Making it, according to its teardown, is 39% of what you pay; VAT is 17%.

The source does not say which storage size the teardown is for: it is set here against the base version, the 128GB one, and for a version with more memory the split is approximate.

For scale, Apple reports that 36.8% of what it bills for its products is gross margin. That is the average across all its hardware, measured on Apple's revenue and not on the shop price: applied to this iPhone's £666 before VAT, it would be about £245. Official Apple prices, read on its online store in each country; the US one is the price Apple lists before tax, which is added at checkout and varies from state to state. VAT is each country's standard rate, with its official source. A teardown is a third-party estimate: Apple does not publish what each model costs it to make. Dollars are converted into each country's currency at the ECB reference rate of 28 September 2026.

What an iPhone costs to make in 2026: memory is now a third of the parts bill

Until 2025 the totals published for recent iPhones sat between $416 and $502: the last one in the open, TD Cowen's for the iPhone 16 in October 2024, came to $416. 2026 broke the pattern: memory prices rose five- to sevenfold from the start of 2025, according to TrendForce, which estimates that memory went from about 10% to about 34% of an iPhone's parts bill in a year.

'The iPhone 17 Pro Max costs $408 to make': where that number comes from

A part-by-part list adding up to $408.13 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max has been shared widely since October 2025. It answers the question in one line, which is why it travels.

The figure going round
$408.13 to make an iPhone 17 Pro Max that sells for $1,199, so Apple keeps the rest.
What can be checked
The list is credited to unnamed 'industry data'. A firm that publishes a named iPhone 17 Pro Max teardown, Counterpoint Research (February 2026), keeps the total in a paid report, and its open comparison of July 2026 gives no total either: only that the 1TB 18 Pro Max costs nearly $300 more.

m8d rule: A teardown figure without a named firm and a date is not a figure: look for both before repeating it.

The firms that price teardowns now publish the change more often than the total. TrendForce puts the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro's components at about 38% above the 17 Pro's. Counterpoint Research expects the 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max to cost nearly $300 more than the 17 Pro Max, with memory the biggest cause and the new 2nm chip the second, while the screen and other parts cost less than before.

iPhone teardown estimates, model by model: what is public and what is not

Apple does not publish what a phone costs it to make, so research firms take one apart and price each part: the bill of materials. For the six iPhones Apple sells today, this is what is published in the open:

  • iPhone 16: $416 (TD Cowen, via AppleInsider, 1 October 2024), without saying which storage size. The only open total.
  • iPhone 17e: 15.6% more in components than the 16e, and memory, whose price has soared, now costs almost as much as the processor (Counterpoint Research, 22 April 2026).
  • iPhone 17: no open estimate; its named teardowns are paid reports.
  • iPhone Air: 2% above the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, with the A19 Pro chip at 18.63% of the total (TechInsights, 1 December 2025).
  • iPhone 18 Pro: about 38% more in components than the 17 Pro at 256GB (TrendForce, 10 August 2026).
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max: nearly $300 more than the 17 Pro Max at 1TB (Counterpoint Research, 8 July 2026).

Where a firm gives only a percentage, the calculator above shows the cost to make as having no public figure instead of guessing one. The last totals published in the open are for earlier models, all but the iPhone 16 no longer sold by Apple:

Did Apple pass the 2026 parts bill on to UK buyers? The case of the 1TB Pro Max

The 1TB Pro Max is the one model where both sides of the sum are public. Counterpoint Research expected its parts to cost nearly $300 more than the 17 Pro Max's. Apple's UK price for it went from £1,599 at the iPhone 17 Pro Max launch to £1,899 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max: £300 more, £250 of it before VAT, about $332 at the ECB rate of 28 September 2026. At 1TB, UK buyers are paying a little more than the whole estimated rise in parts, with VAT on top.

Lower down the range the rise was £100 on every 256GB model, from the iPhone 17 to the Pro Max. The rest of Apple's answer is in the steps between storage sizes.

iPhone storage upgrades in 2026: what 256GB more costs Apple and what UK buyers pay

The step between two storage sizes is where Apple's pricing is easiest to read. On the iPhone 17 Pro Max in 2025, the UK steps were £200 (256GB to 512GB), £200 (to 1TB) and £400 (to 2TB). On the iPhone 18 Pro Max they are £200, £400 and £600.

If you are weighing the 1TB model, we would count it as a £400 decision rather than a specification: at TechInsights' September 2026 price of about $82 for 256GB of phone storage, the extra 512GB is roughly $164 of memory, against about $442 that Apple charges for it before VAT.

Storage costs Apple next to nothing: still true in 2026?

The old rule of thumb says a storage upgrade is almost pure profit. The 2026 memory prices changed the size of that profit, not its direction.

The old rule of thumb
A bigger iPhone costs Apple a few dollars more in memory and costs the buyer a hundred pounds or more.
The 2026 numbers
TechInsights priced a 256GB phone storage chip at about $82 in September 2026, up from $68 in June. Apple charges UK buyers £200 to go from 256GB to 512GB on an iPhone 18 Pro: £166.67 before VAT, about $221. If the extra 256GB costs about as much as one such chip, the step is roughly 2.7 times the memory it adds.

m8d rule: Price the storage step before choosing a size: on a 2026 Pro the three steps cost £200, £400 and £600.

What the iPhone parts bill leaves out: R&D, software, marketing and the shops

A bill of materials is the cost of the parts, and sometimes of assembly and the box. It leaves out what makes an iPhone an iPhone: the work of designing its chips and software, the marketing, the shops and the support. Apple's accounts show the scale. In its 2025 financial year it spent $34.55bn on research and development, 10% more than in 2024, and $27.6bn on selling, general and administrative costs. After the cost of making and delivering its hardware, it kept 36.8% of product sales as gross margin, and 39.9% in the nine months to June 2026.

We would treat any teardown total as the floor of what an iPhone costs Apple, never as its cost: the $416 of an iPhone 16 does not include a penny of the $34.55bn that went into designing its chips and software.

'Parts are 40% of the price, so Apple makes 60% on every iPhone'

A common conclusion of teardown stories, and one that Apple's own accounts contradict.

The shortcut
If the parts cost about 40% of the shop price, the other 60% is Apple's profit.
What the accounts say
Apple's gross margin on hardware was 36.8% in 2025, measured on its own revenue, not on the shop price with VAT, and it comes before $34.55bn of R&D and $27.6bn of selling and running costs. It is an average across every Apple product: Apple does not publish the iPhone's own margin.

m8d rule: Parts cost is not profit: the number to read is the gross margin line in Apple's 10-K.

Quick answers
How much does it cost Apple to make one iPhone?

It depends on the model and on memory prices. The last teardown with an open total puts the iPhone 16 at $416 (TD Cowen, 2024). For the iPhone 18 Pro, TrendForce estimates about 38% more in components than the 17 Pro, without publishing the dollar figure.

How much does it really cost to make an iPhone 17?

The named teardowns of the iPhone 17 are paid reports, and none has published its total in the open. The $408 figure shared for the iPhone 17 Pro Max is credited to unnamed industry data.

How much profit does Apple make per iPhone?

Apple does not say: it publishes neither unit sales nor a margin for the iPhone on its own. Across all its hardware it kept 36.8% of sales as gross margin in 2025, before R&D and running costs.

How much of an iPhone's UK price is VAT?

A sixth. VAT is 20% of the price before tax, so an £899 iPhone 17 carries £149.83 of VAT and £749.17 goes to the seller.

How much does Apple charge to repair an iPhone in the UK?

Apple's UK repair estimator lists, for an iPhone 18 Pro Max out of warranty, £119 for a battery service, £145 for back glass damage, £389 for screen damage and £889 for other damage (read on 28 September 2026).

Why did iPhones cost more to make in 2026?

Mostly because of memory, whose price rose five- to sevenfold from the start of 2025 (TrendForce). Counterpoint Research names the new 2nm chip as the second cause of the rise on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

How these figures were worked out

Teardown figures are the named firms' own estimates, with their dates. Where a firm publishes only a percentage, or keeps the total in a paid report, the page gives the percentage and no dollar figure, and no total is read off a chart. Memory prices are TechInsights' figures of September 2026. UK prices were read on Apple's UK online store on 28 September 2026, and the 2025 UK launch prices come from TechRadar's coverage of 9 September 2025. Dollars are converted at the European Central Bank reference rates of 28 September 2026 (£1 = $1.3263). Apple's margins and costs come from its filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
