LED strip lights for bedroom ceilings, headboards and desks: how many metres each takes, which to buy, renting safely

m8d.ioUpdated on

Bedroom lit by a coloured LED strip behind the headboard

LED strip lights for a bedroom start with a sum: a 3 by 3.5 metre room has 13 metres of ceiling perimeter, and the usual roll is 5. Below 60 LEDs per metre you see dots, not a line. Our pick for a first strip is the TP-Link Tapo L900; for a line with no dots, Govee's 3 metre COB.

How many metres of LED strip lights a bedroom needs: the LED strip length calculator by place and type of light

LED strip light length calculator: metres and the right strip for your bedroom

Choose where the strip goes and what light you want to see, and the calculator does the metre count and says which strip in this guide fits. Free, no sign-up, no ads. Default example: for the ceiling of a 3 by 3.5 metre room in a continuous line, the perimeter is 13 metres plus the drop to the socket, so the 3 metre COB strip covers the one wall you see from the bed.

LED strip length calculator: how many metres your bedroom needs, and which strip to buyTwo questions. The ceiling sum almost nobody does before paying: a 3 by 3.5 metre room is 13 metres of perimeter, and the typical roll brings 5.
1. Where does the strip go?
2. What light do you want to see?
The ceiling line, done right: one wall first

A line with no dots needs COB, and the COB Pro here comes in 3 metres, with cut marks every 8 cm and no extension, according to Govee. On a 13 metre perimeter that is one wall: put it on the wall you see from the bed, measure first and cut at the marks. The whole ceiling in COB means several strips, each with its own power supply.

The nine answers come from the strips in this guide and what each maker declares on its spec sheet, and three warn about a limit before selling anything. If a strip sells out, the button says so.

Wall or ceiling

Where LED strip lights go in a bedroom: ceiling, headboard or desk, and how many metres each place takes

The ceiling: a 3 by 3.5 metre room is 13 metres of perimeter, plus the drop to the socket. The usual 5 metre roll does not reach two walls. The headboard: UK beds are 135 cm wide for a double, 150 for a king and 180 for a super king, according to Which? (May 2026), so any roll covers it and the rest is cut at the marks; it is the wall where dots show most, because it is at eye level. The desk or shelf: 2 or 3 metres, and the question is only one colour at a time or several.

m8d verdict

The low-cost way to find out whether strips are for you: wifi with nothing extra, control from the phone or by voice, and a brand whose app already runs cameras and plugs. It is RGB, so the whole strip changes to the same colour at once: for a desk or a shelf that is plenty; for gradients, look at the COB strip in this guide.

What you should know
  • It is RGB, one colour at a time: you choose from millions, but the whole strip turns the same. The sheet does not say RGBIC, and that absence is the information.
  • It is set up in the same Tapo app as the brand's plugs and cameras. If you already have Tapo at home, there is no extra app.
  • Behind a monitor or under a shelf, the 5 metre roll has metres to spare: the part you do not use stays rolled up or is cut at the marks on the sheet.
+Pros
  • Direct wifi, no bridge and no remote to lose
  • The Tapo app shared with the brand's cameras and plugs
  • 5 metres, enough for a headboard or one wall
−Cons
  • RGB: a single colour at a time on the whole strip
  • Short of metres for a whole ceiling

m8d verdict

The step up: COB technology, so when it is on you see a continuous line of light, not a row of dots on the wall. Three metres, right for a large headboard or a shelf at eye level, which is where dots give ordinary strips away. It is the dearest per metre here, and the only strip in this guide with a UK listing that draws a line.

What you should know
  • COB packs the LEDs into a continuous band: on visible surfaces (headboard, shelf, frame) it is the difference between looking like a shop and looking like a fairground.
  • Govee's page for the COB Strip Light Pro gives 1,260 LEDs per metre and 12 customisable segments per metre, with a cut mark every 8 cm and no extension. It names Matter, Alexa and Google Assistant.
  • It is 3 metres, not 5: measure first. For a headboard with a drop down each side it fits well; for a whole ceiling it is not the strip.
+Pros
  • A continuous line with no dots, and smart
  • Alexa and Google declared on its own sheet
  • The size of a large headboard
−Cons
  • The highest price per metre in this guide
  • 3 metres and no extension: not a strip for a whole ceiling

Between these two, the decision is clear: the Tapo is the low-cost way to find out whether strips are for you, over 5 metres; the Govee COB is the line with no dots, over 3. For a ceiling perimeter neither is enough on its own, and the calculator above says so before you pay.

m8d verdict

What strips do not cover: spot light for reading without lighting the whole room or waking anyone. Clip to the headboard, a battery charged by USB and a flexible neck. A small buy, and one of those that gets used every night.

What you should know
  • The clip grips the headboard or the shelf, and the flexible neck points at the book, not at the face of whoever sleeps next to you.
  • Being rechargeable, it does not depend on a socket near the bed, which is exactly what headboards tend to lack.
  • It is task light: it complements the strip, it does not replace it. A strip plus a clip lamp covers a bedroom's whole evening.
+Pros
  • Rechargeable: no batteries to buy and no socket nearby
  • Clip and flexible neck: it points where you want
  • A brand with its own lighting catalogue
−Cons
  • Spot light: it does not light the room
  • Like any battery, it loses run time over the years

m8d verdict

The bedroom classic that still works: 5 metres, 50 points of warm light and 30 clips for printed photos, tickets or anything that tells a story. It does not try to light the room, it decorates, so here LEDs per metre do not matter: each point is an ornament, not a light source.

What you should know
  • It is decoration with light, not lighting: it goes with a strip or the main light, it does not replace them.
  • The 30 clips are the real product: a photo wall with light behind it is one of the few set-ups done in ten minutes that changes a whole wall.
  • Running on batteries or USB depending on how it is used, it hangs where no socket reaches.
+Pros
  • A complete photo wall in one box
  • 30 clips included, nothing else to buy
  • Minutes to set up, no tools
−Cons
  • It does not light the room: it is an ornament with light
  • 50 points over 5 metres is decoration, and here that is right

How to read an LED strip light's spec sheet in twenty seconds: LEDs per metre first, then RGB or RGBIC

The density trap: two real spec sheets, read on 14 August 2026

Cheap strips are sold by the metre, and the sheet buries the only figure that separates a line of light from a row of specks: how many LEDs there are in each metre. Two cases from the same day show it better than any theory.

“30 LEDs per metre” and “450 LEDs”, in the same title

A 20 metre wifi strip sold on Amazon Spain declares 30 LEDs per metre and 450 LEDs in total in the same title. Both cannot be true: 450 over 20 metres is 22.5 LEDs per metre. The sheet corrects itself; you only have to divide.

“90 LEDs” that sound like a lot

On a Spanish DIY chain's marketplace, a 5 metre battery strip advertises 90 LEDs as its selling point. That is 18 per metre: one speck every five and a half centimetres. Switched on, it does not draw a line, it draws a row of loose dots.

What the good ones declare

The decent standard is around 60 LEDs per metre: fine dots that merge at a couple of metres. COB strips pack hundreds into a continuous band: a cut-to-length COB in the Spanish catalogue declares 320 per metre, a CRI90 wifi COB 480, and Govee's page gives 1,260 for the COB Strip Light Pro in this guide. A maker with a good figure publishes it.

m8d rule: Divide the LEDs by the metres before paying: below 60 per metre you will see dots, not a line, and we recommend COB where the strip is on show, because a true continuous line declares 300 or more.

The “16 million colours” have a catch: RGB or RGBIC

Almost every strip boasts millions of colours. The right question is another one: how many colours at once?

RGB: millions of colours, one at a time

An RGB strip chooses from millions of colours, but the whole strip is painted the same at the same time. The gradient in the photos online does not come from an RGB strip, whatever colour it shows.

RGBIC: separate segments at once

The IC chip makes segments independent: half the strip in one colour and half in another, gradients and waves. The proof that it is not marketing comes from the leader itself: Govee sells RGB and RGBIC as different products at different prices, and TP-Link separates its L900 from its L930 in the same way. Sheets read on 14 August 2026.

m8d rule: If the sheet does not say RGBIC (or “addressable”), the whole strip changes to the same colour at once, however many millions it promises.

The UK questions

Are LED strip lights safe to leave on all night, and what does a night of LED strip light cost?

A plug-in strip runs from an adapter, and the adapter is the part that goes into the wall. In the UK that adapter has to come fitted with a UK plug to BS 1363 or an approved conversion plug, under the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994, which is the first thing to check on a strip bought online. What a night costs is small: at Ofgem's price cap for October to December 2026, 26.32p per kWh on Direct Debit, a strip drawing 20 W for eight hours uses 0.16 kWh, about 4p a night. The sum with your own figures: watts times hours, divided by 1,000, times your price per kWh.

The rule for the night: check the plug on the adapter, keep the adapter where air reaches it rather than under a mattress or a duvet, since power supplies warm up in use, and let the app's schedule switch the strip off.
Power, three ways

Do LED strip lights have to be plugged in? USB, a UK plug or the mains, and what Part P says about wiring one in

No. Short strips for a desk run from a USB port, most bedroom strips come with a plug-in adapter, and a strip can also be wired into the lighting circuit through a driver, like any fixed light. In England, Approved Document P (2013 edition, in force since 6 April 2013) makes notifiable only a new circuit, a new consumer unit and work in a special location, which means a room with a bath or shower, a pool or a sauna. A bedroom is not one, so wiring a strip into its existing lighting circuit is not notifiable, while a new circuit is; the work still has to follow BS 7671, the wiring regulations. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules.

The paint and the deposit

Renting in the UK: LED strip lights without losing your deposit

In England and Wales your deposit sits in one of three government-approved schemes, the Deposit Protection Service, MyDeposits and the Tenancy Deposit Scheme, and gov.uk sets out that you get it back if you meet the terms of your tenancy, do not damage the property and pay your rent and bills; in England, assured periodic tenancies replaced assured shorthold tenancies on 1 May 2026. The spec sheets of the strips in this guide, read on 14 August 2026, do not promise that the adhesive comes off without damaging paint. That silence is the information: the adhesive really grips, and on emulsion it can take paint with it. To remove a strip already stuck on, the least bad method is gentle heat from a hairdryer and dental floss behind it, slowly.

The renter's rule: if the wall is yours, adhesive and done; if it is rented, a profile or a channel held by clips or two fine screws, which fill in five minutes when you leave, or the strip on the furniture instead of the wall: the back of the headboard or the underside of a shelf.

The figures are those each maker declares on its spec sheet, read on 14 August 2026, with the Govee COB Strip Light Pro's density and segments from Govee's own page, read on 27 September 2026.

How we chose these lights, and where each figure comes from

We started from the lighting catalogue read on 14 August 2026, from Amazon Spain, part of Amazon's shared European catalogue, keeping the strips and lights whose own sheet declares the figure that decides each case: LEDs per metre, type of control, colour temperature and cut point. On 27 September 2026 each one was checked for a listing on sale on Amazon UK; the ones without one are out of this guide, which is why it recommends two strips and not three. The UK layer comes from UK sources: Which? for bed sizes, Ofgem's price cap for the running cost, gov.uk for deposits, the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994 for the plug and Approved Document P for wiring. Claims about adhesives come from what the sheets declare and, above all, from what none of them promises. Availability varies by country, and the buttons take you to Amazon in yours.

LED strip light questions asked in the UK
Are LED strip lights safe for bedrooms?

The strip runs from its adapter, and the adapter is the part to check: in the UK it has to come with a UK plug to BS 1363 or an approved conversion plug. Keep the adapter where air reaches it, not under a mattress or duvet, and use the app's schedule so the strip does not run all night by mistake.

Is it safe to leave LED strip lights on all night?

The same checks apply: a UK plug on the adapter and the adapter in the open. The cost is small: at Ofgem's price cap for October to December 2026, 26.32p per kWh, a strip drawing 20 W for eight hours uses 0.16 kWh, about 4p a night. A schedule in the app does the switching off for you.

Do LED strip lights use a lot of electricity?

No. The sum is watts times hours, divided by 1,000, times your price per kWh. At the October to December 2026 price cap, a 20 W strip on four hours every evening uses about 29 kWh a year, roughly £7.70.

Should LED strips go on the wall or the ceiling?

Where they are seen. Round the ceiling of a 3 by 3.5 metre room is 13 metres plus the drop to the socket, which one 5 metre roll does not cover; behind the headboard, 135 cm for a UK double or 150 for a king is enough, and it is the wall you look at most. Starting with one wall usually beats half a ceiling.

How many metres of LED strip does a bedroom need?

It depends on the place: the ceiling of a 3 by 3.5 metre room is 13 metres of perimeter plus the drop to the socket, a UK double headboard is covered with 1.5 to 2 metres, and behind a monitor 2 or 3. The usual mistake is buying one 5 metre roll for the ceiling: it does not reach two walls.

What is the difference between RGB and RGBIC?

An RGB strip chooses from millions of colours but paints the whole strip the same at once; an RGBIC strip has a chip that makes segments independent, so it shows several colours and gradients at the same time. It is not marketing: Govee and TP-Link sell the two technologies as different products at different prices.

Can you cut LED strip lights to size?

Yes, at the cut marks printed on the strip, and the interval matters: Govee gives a cut mark every 8 cm on its COB Strip Light Pro, which cannot be extended afterwards. What you cut off cannot be reused without a separate connector, so measure first and cut after.
